This February, a post by a Milan hotel clerk named Karem went viral online. In the post, he held up a Hsu Fu Chi candy wrapper and asked Chinese tourists to help get him a fresh supply of the Guangdong crisp candy. The post sparked a heart-warming cross-border "candy relay", turning this little treat, made in Dongguan, into a sweet testament to how Guangdong-made products have traveled the world. In the early hours of April 7th, Karem arrived in Guangdong and embarked on a five-day journey across the province, during which he will experience the making of the crisp candy firsthand, soak up the local innovation vibe in Guangzhou and Shenzhen, and savor authentic Cantonese cuisine.
Recently, a "Becoming Chinese" trend has been making waves across social media platforms. Unlike the previous curiosity-driven fascination with Chinese cultural symbols, international netizens today are keen on immersing themselves in Chinese-style daily routines: starting the morning with a cup of warm water to soothe the stomach, switching to comfortable, soft-soled slippers at home, and happily queuing up just for a bowl of authentic street food... Through these seemingly small daily habits, they offer the world a vivid portrait of the unique laid-back vibes and everyday warmth that define the Chinese way of living.
When this craze hits South China's Guangdong Province, the sparks it strikes are particularly dazzling. In the eyes of young international students studying and living here, Guangdong is not only the home base for its locally-made products to go global, but also their first stop in starting their lives in China. Amid the hustle and bustle of the city streets, they have forged a special bond with Guangdong-made products that transcends mountains and oceans. Woven into the fabric of their everyday life, these products are no longer mere merchandise—they have become the vibrant carriers of Lingnan culture, allowing more and more people around the world to understand China and fall in love with it.
This episode of Gen Z Pop Quiz continues to uncover the Guangdong-made products that capture the hearts of international students in Guangzhou. From must-have items they just can't stop repurchasing, to daily habits that have gradually become second nature, what magic do these "Guangdong goods" hold? Let's find out.
