February 2 is World Wetlands Day, a day dedicated to raising awareness about the importance of wetlands and the need to protect these vital ecosystems. Wetlands provide habitats for countless species, help regulate water cycles, and play a key role in mitigating climate change. Protecting them is essential not only for biodiversity but also for the health of our planet.
One of China’s most important wetlands is Chongming Dongtan, located at the mouth of the Yangtze River. At sunrise, vast tidal flats emerge, and the wetland comes alive with activity. Home to more than 300 bird species — nearly one quarter of all bird species found in China — it is a crucial stop along the East Asia–Australasia Flyway.
Following the UNDP Biodiversity Finance Initiative (BIOFIN), SFC reporter had the opportunity to see China’s efforts to conserve biodiversity and protect critical ecosystems on-site.
