Chengdu, known as the hometown of giant pandas, is set to impress the world once again. This time, the spotlight isn't solely on the adorable animals, but also on an extraordinary world-class sporting event.
The 31st FISU World University Games, which was postponed twice due to COVID-19 concerns, is set to open on Friday and runs through August 8 in Chengdu, capital of southwest China's Sichuan Province.
Around 65,000 athletes from 113 countries and regions are competing in 269 events across 18 sports, with China's delegation comprising over 700 members, including 411 athletes from over 100 universities across the country, according to the organizer today. In addition to 15 mandatory sports, it also includes three optional sports — rowing, shooting, and Wushu.
Founded in 1949 and headquartered in Lausanne, Switzerland, FISU is the key driver to expand the role and reach of university sport around the world. FISU offers opportunity and inspiration to students around the world to play sport. The health, well-being, and experiences that students gain from sport help them become active members in global society.
In keeping with this adage, FISU organizes world-class sports and educational events, all with the mission of providing university students with the opportunities to connect and exchange with students from around the world, in a collaborative and competitive environment.
The FISU World University Games is held every two years in a different city. Chengdu will become the third city in the Chinese mainland to host the biennial Summer Universiade, following Beijing in 2001 and Shenzhen in 2011.
Chengdu isn't a stranger to staging international sporting events. This mega-city of over 20 million people played host to the World Police and Fire Games in 2019 and World Team Table Tennis Championships in 2022. It will also host the World Games in 2025.
This year, the Chengdu World University Games was met with enormous enthusiasm, as over 70,000 tickets for nine sporting events at the Games sold out in minutes after sale were launched on July 19.
Sales of tickets for athletics, swimming, volleyball, tennis, diving, taekwondo, judo, wushu and fencing began at 3:00 pm last Wednesday. All the tickets, including those for the preliminary and finals, were snapped up soon after their official release on WeChat and the website for the Games.
Volunteers for the upcoming Chengdu Universiade have also officially begun their work with teams of helpers now on hand to assist visitors arriving at more than 1,000 service spots set up around the venues, park greenways, transportation hubs and commercial areas of the host city.
Green to the core
China's progress in promoting green growth will be fully displayed during this sports event, embracing cutting-edge technologies that will not only provide a refreshing experience for participants during the hot summer but also leave a lasting green legacy for the event and its participants.
Summers in Chengdu are hot and humid with little wind. To keep the buildings cool amid the heatwaves while maintaining low carbon emissions, architects designed hourglass-shaped alleys inside buildings, which can increase air flow and thus take the heat away.
The construction and renovation of the major venues for the Chengdu Universiade demonstrate a commitment to sustainability. Using new technologies, new energy and innovative materials, the organizers aim for low carbon emissions, energy efficiency and environmental protection.
The Xindu Xiangcheng Sports Center Gymnasium, the venue of the water polo competitions, is a prime example, with its rainwater recycling. This system retains rainwater and treats it so that it can be used for greening the stadium and its maintenance. This reduces water consumption by 20 percent, saving over 3,000 tons of water annually.
The Chengdu FISU Games is to harness Sichuan's abundant renewable energy resources. It is to achieve 100 percent use of "green power" for regular electricity consumption during the opening and closing ceremonies, the main media center, the FISU Games Village and the competition venues during the games. Advanced energy technologies and new energy facilities such as cadmium telluride solar panels, ground source heat pumps, as well as charging and swapping stations, are to be utilized to reduce carbon emissions.
A fleet of new buses will be temporarily used during the Chengdu FISU Games, which greatly reduces vehicle procurement expenses. A total of 1,340 new energy buses and more than 1,000 new energy cars are dedicated to providing transportation services for athletes, technical officials and media personnel during the event.
According to an official from the Chengdu ecology and environment bureau, of the transportation between the FISU Games Village and venues in the central urban area, 90 percent is carried out by new energy vehicles. Additionally, 100 percent of the transportation within the FISU Games Village is operated using new energy shuttle buses.
In the Dong'an Lake Sports Park Multi-Purpose Gymnasium, a competition and warm-up venue for artistic gymnastics events, an energy consumption monitoring system was installed to record real-time data and analyze energy consumption of facilities in all venues.
In case of abnormal or excessive power usage in certain areas, the system will respond promptly to activate energy-saving measures, said a manager for logistics support services of the venue.
Sport is smart
Chengdu has equipped the athletes' village with various cutting-edge technologies to help athletes and delegations around the world enjoy their time during the Universiade.
To achieve the goal of hosting a smart event, the Chengdu FISU Games has integrated more than 170 technological products including venue construction, event support and digital viewing. These products have been implemented across more than 30 venues, ensuring seamless organization, participation and viewing experiences.
In terms of event support, the "Rongbao" robot, inspired by the Chengdu FISU Games mascot, is the world's first service robot with emergency functions. It can deliver emergency kits, defibrillators and other medical emergency tools at venues. The robot can also provide intelligent services, including providing directions, broadcasting information, translating languages, assisting remote communication and answering questions.
Language can always be a problem for people who travel to a foreign country, but that problem has been taken care of in the athletes' village in Chengdu. A smart translation intercommunication system is ready to help anyone who needs a translation.
The system carries the new generation of artificial intelligence (AI) translation barrier-free communication system and uses neural machine translation, speech recognition, natural-language understanding and speech synthesis technologies. It provides online translation, text transformation and speech synthesis of a total of 83 languages during the Chengdu Universiade.
The Games has also introduced a variety of intelligent robots to assist in athletic training and daily life services. These include a table tennis training robot, a coffee robot and a humanoid robot capable of dancing and walking at pace.
Building upon its accomplishments as a smart city, Chengdu has leveraged cutting-edge technologies like 5G, 8K, AI, the internet of things, cloud computing and big data to create a sports event information system, a smart venue management system and a FISU Games service system.
Delegations are not the only ones enjoying all of the convenience brought by technologies during the Universiade. Many of the volunteers have to work in the open air for hours in the hot weather in Chengdu. They can receive cooling vests from the smart cooling station to protect themselves from the high temperatures. These vests are made of a phase-change material, which is often used for aerodynamic cooling in aerospace engineering. They stay at 23 degrees Celsius to keep the volunteers cool.
Colorful cultures in exchange
The FISU Games goes beyond a mere sporting event. It serves as a platform for young people from diverse backgrounds to communicate. The ongoing Chengdu FISU Games is set to make fresh contributions toward advancing cultural exchanges, assist mutual learning and foster a community with a shared future for mankind.
During the games, a variety of events are to be lined up to assist exchanges in sports, technology, culture and innovation among students from across the world. This platform offers young people the opportunity to learn more about diverse cultures within a vibrant and relaxed atmosphere, enabling them to deepen mutual understanding and foster friendships.
Known as the hometown of giant pandas, Chengdu has also laid on a series of sporting and cultural activities involving giant pandas and Sichuan Opera. Under the theme of a garden city aesthetic experience, the organizing committee has carefully planned and launched 16 spots for cultural display and exchange activities. More than 20 key cultural activities will be held during the Games.
The Games offer an opportunity for the FISU to underline and promote its values in terms of respect, friendship, non-discrimination, gender equality, a healthy lifestyle and sustainability in climate protection, FISU Acting President Leonz Eder said.
The Universiade is a celebration of international university sports and culture, and brings together thousands of student-athletes, making it one of the world's largest multi-sport events.
On Monday, Chengdu welcomed the first batch of overseas guests as officials of the Brazilian delegation arrived at Chengdu Tianfu International Airport.
"Chengdu is a big and prosperous city for the World University Games and we are very happy to come here and participate in the Games," Kelly of the Brazilian delegation said after arrival, which is arriving with 215 members to participate in 11 sports.
Volunteers also play a crucial role in the games, providing valuable support and serving as ambassadors for cultural exchange. A total of 20,000 volunteers, recruited from 34 universities, will provide services throughout the event. With their enthusiasm, friendliness and professionalism, they are to showcase a vibrant image of Chinese youth.
Chengdu is a city of youth, as the number of residents aged between 14 and 45 in Chengdu exceeds 9.6 million, accounting for over 45 percent of the city's population, making it one of the most vibrant cities in China. The upcoming Universiade is expected to inject more vitality into this historical city.
Leaving a lasting legacy
Beyond the immediate event, Chengdu FISU Games aims to leave a lasting legacy. Post-event, its venues will host other major events such as the World Sports Dance Festival and the International Tennis Federation World Tour, according to Chengdu sports bureau.
Additionally, the venues will be open to influential professional club events like football, basketball, volleyball, table tennis and badminton matches as well as e-sports. This proactive approach seeks to enhance the venues' competitiveness while catering to market demands.
Chengdu has completed the construction, renovation, and expansion of 49 venues and facilities, including 13 new venues and 36 existing ones, which boast top-tier infrastructure and service.
All sports facilities, including the Dong'an Lake Sports Park where the opening ceremony will take place tonight, were put into use by April 2021. Data shows that since the preparation works began, the competition venues have been open for nearly 80,000 hours, serving more than 5.1 million people, and hosting 730 events.
According to local media reports, authorities in Chengdu have conducted more than 1,800 scientific fitness guidance services in the venues so far, and the fitness pass rate of local citizens has increased year-on-year, reaching 94.61 percent in 2022.
In focusing on meeting people's needs, China has gradually made more facilities for fitness-for-all activities available and established a higher-level public service system for the country's Fitness-for-All programs.
By showcasing new and more precise technologies, many of which are yet to be widely applied in people's lives, Chengdu FISU Games is a significant contributor to the nation's sustainable development. It is also creating lasting benefits for its residents and fostering a sense of pride and accomplishment as it embraces cutting-edge solutions for a shared future.
